ENGLISH LONGBOWS | ||
![]() | These are the bows which were used by Robin Hood and by the archers in the Hundred Years War, They take longer to become accurate than with modern bows, but more and more archers are changing to them because they are fun to shoot, and you know that you are shooting the way it used to be done. Our GYS longbows are made from Ash, and are self-nocked. They are full-compass, which means that they bend throughout their length, which is what the medieval bows did. The longer the bow is the slower it shoots the arrows and the less distance they will go, so we supply these bows in various lengths according to the height of the archer and his draw-length. You don't have to bother with this, we will supply the right length once we know your draw-length. They are intended for people wanting a first longbow for field archery or re-enactment, or for shooting for fun on their own ground but not wanting to spend too much to start with.
Most people want a bow between twenty or forty pounds pull, which we have in stock, but we can now supply them up to seventy pounds pull and up to thirty inches in draw-length for really tall people. If you want to get the feel of what it was like to be an archer in those far-off days, get yourself a copy of "The White Company" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. With each bow we send out we enclose a nicely printed copy of the poem "The Ballad of the Bowmen" from the above-mentioned book, for you to frame and hang on your wall. And why do we call them "GYS" bows? It stands for "Getting you started", that's why, and it's easy to remember! £79.00 (The colours of the handle may vary). | ![]() |
| SOME ADVICE |
If you are new to longbow shooting, don't go for an expensive bow, get your feet wet first. If you go to battles or field-shooting you will get your feet wet anyway, but don't splash out (sorry) on the most expensive bow when something cheaper will do. Buy a fairly weak one that will build your muscles up over your first year, and then go for a much better model later on. You will then be sure of your draw-length and bow weight, and you will buy a bow that is just right for you, and which will last you for many years. |
Postage and packing on longbows is £11.50 |
